AFTER WORKING AT WILLYS-OVERLAND & FAIRBANKS-MORSE IN TORONTO, & IN AUTO GARAGE IN AURORA, IN 1931 HE BEGAN HIS OWN BUSINESS, ONE PART OF WHICHINVOLVED AUTOMOTIVE ELECTRICAL SERVICING.
Function: PROTECTIVE WEAR FOR HANDS OF WORKER INVOLVED IN HANDLING OF AUTOMOTIVE STORAGE BATTERIES CONTAINING SULPHURIC ACID ELECTROLYTE.
Technical: EXAMPLE OF PROTECTIVE WEAR INTENDED TO PROTECT WORKERS FROM BATTERY ACID WHICH OFTEN COATED BATTERY EXTERIORS. SAFETY PRACTICES DEVELOPED SLOWLY, WITH LONG TERM EFFECTS OF WORK PLACE HAZARDS WERE LARGELY UNKNOWN & MANY OF SHORT TERM KNOWN ONES IGNORED BY MANAGEMENT. RUBBER GLOVES, APRONS, & RESPIRATORS WERE PROVIDED FOR TRADE BUT OFTEN WERE NOT USED (REF. 1).
