IN 1920S BATTERIES WERE NOT SHIPPED FILLED WITH ACID BUT WERE BUILT BY SMALL SHOPS AS NEEDED FOR LOCAL TRADE USING STANDARD PARTS FROM MFRS. LATER, PRACTICE ALTERED FROM SHIPPING BATTERY PARTS FOR CONSTRUCTION LOCALLY TO PACKAGING THEM WET (OR ACID FILLED), ELIMINATING NEED FOR LOCAL BUILDERS. IT ALSO REQUIRED CONSIDERABLE CARE IN HANDLING & CHANGES IN BATTERY CONSTRUCTION ITSELF (REF. 1). - Area Notes
