Donor was in the RCAF and was stationed at the Metz Canadian air division headquarters after World War II. Donor collected vinl records, but was intrigued by the new tape recording mediums that became available at that time. One of Allatt's comrades ourchased the Tandberg 5 tape player-recorder when passing throug Norway, brought it back to the Metz RCAF headquarters, and sold it to Allatt. (Taken from the worksheet)

Technical

The model 5 recorder was, like most Tandbergs, a three-springed model, with a single motor sitting right between the reels. Made in 1958, the model 5 is curious in that it's actually a four-track machine and, although it can playback stereo tapes, it can only record in mono; the rationale being that there was only a minute amount of recordable stereo material available. Refording in stereo sound was made possible by connecting an optional stereo record amplifier to the tape player-recorder. This tape player-recorder is one of the first European-made stereo recording devices made available on the market. An interesting fact is that although the machine has two power amplifiers for playing back stereo tapes, only one loudspeaker is built into the case. (Taken from the worksheet)
