Referenced in Dick Bourgeois-Doyle’s book, George J. Klein: The Great Inventor ~ Chapter 6: The Seeds of Snow, the objective Klein’s 1948 NRC research paper Canadian Survey of Physical Characteristics of Snow Covers: … to carry out periodic measurements of the physical characteristics of the snow-cover at a number of observation stations in order to obtain useful data applicable to a wide variety of winter problems, especially to those in which the condition of the snow is an important factor. The survey was intended to provide a basis for future studies of the fundamental properties of the various forms of fallen snow¹ .[see Supp. Info. for the complete Canadian Context].
Function
The snow hardness gauge (1.1.4) can be used horizontally at each layer in a snow pit, or vertically to measure the hardness of a thin layer of snow at the surface. The methods and detailed instructions and technical function for using the Klein snow instruments as well as diagrams and photos can be found in *Method of Measuring the Significant Characteristics of a Snow-Cover (1946) and Canadian Survey of Physical Characteristics of Snow Covers (1950).*
Technical
Lightweight, compact, durable and rust-proof instruments adapted for the use in the field. The NRC- type spring hardness gauge (1.1.4) is used to obtain snow hardness readings. Used horizontally against the wall of a snow trench or snow pit; a reading is obtained by slowly pressing the gauge squarely against the snow. The gauge may also be used vertically to measure the hardness of a thing layer of surface snow.
