This artifact was used both by the donor, and the donor's father as a display piece in their home between the 1960's and 2015.

Canada

The donor’s father was a dairy scientist with the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food for some 41 years. He collected old items related to dairying, and these items ended up with the donor upon his passing. He would go antique shopping in the Gananoque region of Ontario as well as trade some of his old clothing items. His exchanges were quite often for antique bottles found across the northern part of Leeds County. The donor further bolstered the collection with antiques from the eastern Townships in his quest to recreate a general store set in the 1890s in his basement in the Glebe neighborhood of Ottawa. Le père du donateur était un scientifique des produits laitiers qui travaillait pour le ministère de l'Agriculture et de l'Alimentation de l'Ontario pour plus de 41 ans. Il a collectionné des artefacts qui correspondaient à son métier. Son fils a contribué à la collection en magasinant pour des antiques dans la région de Gananoque en Ontario. Il a aussi augmenté la collection en échangeant ces vêtements usagés contre des bouteilles antiques retrouvé au travers Leeds Compté. Le but de ces acquisitions était pour créer un magasin général situé dans les années 1890-s dans son sous-sol à Ottawa. Dernièrement le donateur a aussi amélioré la collection avec des objets qu'il a achetés qui appartenaient de la région des Cantons de L'Est.

Function

This bed warmer was used to keep a person warm in bed by heating boiling water on the stove and filling it inside the object. Cette chauffe lit est utilisé pour réchauffer au moyen d'eau chaude. Une personne pouvait apporter le chauffe lit avec eux et le garder près du corps pendant leur sommeil pour rester chaud.

Technical

A multitude of designs of ceramic bed warmers existed before the invention of central heating and electric blankets. They also existed in other forms such as copper basins that were filled with warm water in a similar fashion. Une multitude de designs de bouillottes en céramique existaient avant l’avènement du chauffage central ou électrique, ou des couvertures électriques. Elles existaient aussi dans d’autres matériaux et formes comme les bassinoires en cuivre.

Finish

A cylindrical object made of a beige ceramic. It has a handle at the top of it that is made of the same material. The front of the object has a cap that is also made of ceramic. The cap has ridges around its circumference. Inside the cap is a black rubber ring. Underneath the artifact black lettering can be seen that indicates the amount of liquid that can be filled inside the object. Un objet cylindrique qui est faite avec de la céramique de couleur beige. Il y a une manche au-dessus de l'objet qui est fait avec le même matériel. Un bouchon est visible sur le devant de l'objet qui est aussi fait en céramique. La circonférence du bouchon est rayée. À l'intérieur du bouchon il y a une rondelle en caoutchouc pour sceller le bouchon. En dessous de l'objet il y a un lettrage noir qui indiquent le montant de liquide qui peut être supporté par l'artefact.
