This durometer was donated to the collection by an aircraft mechanic who worked for Spartan Air Services from 1952 to 1983. The donor found this durometer in his office upon his retirement. It was used at Spartan Air Services to measure the hardness of the full bubble canopies (ie: for Bell 47s) made by the company. Ce duromètre est parvenu à la collection grâce à un mécanicien d'avion qui travaillait pour les Services de transport Aérien Spartan (Spartan Air Services) entre 1952 et 1983 respectivement. Le donateur a trouvé le duromètre dans son bureau quand il a pris sa retraite. L'objet était utilisé è la compagnie ou le donateur travaillait pour mesurer la dureté au duromètre des verrières bulles (pour les Bell 47) construit par Spartan Air Services.
Function
Durometers are typically used to measure hardness in polymers, elastomers, and rubbers. The instrument’s indenter is pressed into a given material and the depth of its indentation in the material being tested is measured. Different scales are used for materials, depending on the properties of that material. For example, the A scale is used for softer plastics and the D scale for harder ones. Les duromètres sont typiquement utilisés pour mesurer la dureté des polymères, les élastomères et les caoutchoucs. Le pénétrateur de l'instrument est inséré dans un matériel et la profondeur de pénétration est mesurée. Des échelles différentes sont utilisées dépendants du matériel et ces propriétés. Technical
The Shore Durometer was invented by an American man named Albert F. Shore. He founded the Shore Instrument & Manufacturing Company Inc. and produced the first quadrant type durometers in 1915. Shore developed the durometer scale in the 1920s. While his devices were not the first to measure hardness or to be called a durometer, today such instruments usually refer to those measuring Shore hardness. Le Duromètre Shore était conçu par l'Américain Albert F. Shore. Il était le fondateur de Shore Instrument&Manufacturing Company Inc. et a construit le premier duromètre à type quadrant en 1915. Shore a aussi développé l'échelle du duromètre dans les années 1920s. Ces dispositifs n'étaient pas les premiers utilisés pour mesurer la dureté des éléments ni appeler un duromètre. Malgré ça, aujourd'hui ces genres d'instruments normalement font référence à la dureté mesurer sous l'échelle conçue par Shore.

Finish
An object made of metal that is covered in a black synthetic material. It has a round button on the top of it with a threaded metal hole. The front face of the object has a glass screen. Behind the screen is a gauge with black lettering and a red metal indicator arm. A metal foot at the base of the object is silver in colour and can swivel to hide or show a needle that protrudes from the base. The back of the object has white lettering with both manufacturing information as well as a model name or serial number. Un objet qui a une coquille de couleur noire fait avec du matériel en métal qui est recouvert avec un matériel synthétique. Il a un bouton rond sur sont dessus qui a un trou fileté. La face de l'objet a en écran en verre et une jauge avec du lettrage noir et en bras en métal de couleur rouge. Un pied en métal de couleur argent peut pivoter pour cacher ou montrer une aiguille en métal sous la base de l'objet. Le dos de l'objet a deux vis en métal ainsi que de l'information sur le modèle ou le numéro de série et le manufacturier écrit en lettrage blanc.
