This protractor was donated to the collection by an aircraft mechanic who worked for Spartan Air Services from 1952 to 1983. The donor found this protractor in his office upon his retirement. It was used at Spartan Air Services in the machine shop shop built specifically to service the company’s fleet of helicopters. Ce rapporteur biseauté est parvenu à la collection grâce à un mécanicien d'avion qui travaillait pour les Services de transport Aérien Spartan (Spartan Air Services) entre 1952 et 1983 respectivement. Le donateur a trouvé le rapporteur biseauté dans son bureau quand il a pris sa retraite. L'objet était utilisé à la compagnie ou le donateur travaillait à l’atelier d’usinage pour l’entretien de la flotte d’hélicoptères de Spartan Air Services.

Function

This case was used to house a bevel protractor. It protected the artifact during transportation as well as during storage. L'étui était utilisé pour protéger un rapporteur oblique pendant son transport. L'étui était aussi utilisé pour le rangement de l'artefact.

Technical

Bevel protractors have a long history of use in occupations requiring precision measurement, in particular, drafting and engineering. This instrument is used primarily for angular measurements. This metal instrument consists of a circular protractor housed within an irregularly shaped blade. An 11-1/2” or 5-1/2” trapezoidal blade slides into the housing. A screw on the protractor fixes that blade in place. The protractor is divided by single degrees and marked by tens from 0° to 90° to 0° to 90° to 0°. A Vernier (a smaller scale) is attached by another screw and permits angle readings to five minutes of accuracy. Les rapporteurs biseautés sont utilisés fréquemment quand des mesurages précis sont de nécessité comme les desseins techniques et les desseins industriels. Cet instrument est utilisé principalement pour des mesures angulaires. L'instrument consiste d'un rapporteur circulaire tenu à l'intérieur d’une lame en forme irrégulière. Une lame en forme trapézoïdal qui est soit 11 pouces et demi ou cinq pouces et demi glisse à l'intérieur de l'objet. Une vis sur le rapporteur fixe la lame en place. Le rapporteur est divisé par dégrées simple et ils portent des marques qui augmentent en séries de dix dégrées à la fois en commençant à 0° jusqu'à 90° et de retour jusqu'à 0°. L'échelle répète en alternant un total de quatre fois entre les deux séries d'angles. Une échelle à vernier est attachée avec une autre vis qui permet la lecture des angles à une précision de cinq minutes.

Finish

An object made of black synthetic material that is rectangular in shape and has two brass metal hinges on its back. The front lid of the artifact also has two brass latches to close it. The inside lid of the case has white markings to not the manufacturer. The bottom of the inside of the case is moulded with velvet material the same colour as the case and shaped in order to accommodate a bevel protractor with a Vernier scale. Un étui fait avec un matériel noir synthétique qui est faite en forme rectangulaire et a deux charnières qui sont faites en laiton. En avant du couvercle de l'étui il y a deux loquets faits avec le même métal que les charnières qui sont utilisées pour fermer l'étui. À l'intérieur du couvercle de l'étui il y a des marques en lettrage blanc pour noter le manufacturier. Le fond de l'étui est moulé avec un matériel en velours pour accommoder un rapporteur oblique avec une échelle à vernier.
