The Wright brothers, Wilbur and Orville, were the first people able to make a controlled and sustained flight in a powered airplane, in December 1903, at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. In 1927, U.S President Coolidge signed a bill assigning a sum of money for the construction of what became the Wright Brothers National Memorial. The memorial was dedicated in 1932. Markers on the ground indicated where the plane had landed after its four flights in December 1903. This broach was presumably designed just before or after the dedication of the Wright Brothers National Memorial. Made by the Bastian Brothers Company of Rochester New York, it carried an image of the monument in orange enamel and an inscription in blue enamel. Founded in 1895 as a jewellery store, Bastian Brothers later went into the production of a variety of items such as badges, buttons and lapel pins. The original owner of the broach was Dr. James A. Fairie, born in 1873, in Montreal. Fairie joined the Canadian Army Medical in February 1915, as a Lieutenant. He served Canada during the First World War, retiring as a Captain. - Function
