Period
Donor's family owned and used this sewing machine from 1947-1995.
Canada
This sewing machine belonged to the mother of the donor. The mother was born March 19th 1923 in the city of Beira in Mozambique, which was a Portuguese colony at the time. The mother, Fernanda, received the sewing machine as a gift from her fiancé before their wedding. She would use the machine to sow clothes for herself and her family. Fernanda would also teach young African girls how to sow near their church with this machine. The family had to leave Mozambique in 1979 after the Revolution. Many people were expelled from the country in a hurry, including the family of the donor. Considering the circumstances, they were only able to bring the bare minimum in terms of luggage. However, they were able to bring the sewing machine with them. The family would settle in the city of Lisbon, in Portugal and eventually immigrated to Canada in 1979 in Montreal. The parents of the donor would remain in Canada until their deaths. They were both proud of becoming Canadian citizens and both spoke English and French. The sewing machine has not been used since 1995.
