Period
This artifact was gold plated and then presented to the donor by Rogers Cable Systems on May 23, 1984, as a token of “appreciation for your contributions to the communications industry.”
Canada
This artifact represents the development of one of Canada’s earliest commercial cable television systems because of Edwin R. Jarmain. In 1952, he successfully established an experimental cable operation in London, Ontario. He increased reliable access to over-the-air television by erecting a large rhombic antenna, and then transmitting—via cable. The rhombic antenna could pull down a stronger signal and provide a much more reliable television service. By 1974, service had expanded to 100,000 homes in Ontario, prompting Jarmain and his sons to go public as Canadian Cablesystems Inc. The company was bought out by Rogers Communications in 1979. In 2011, Jarmain was inducted into Canada's Telecommunications Hall of Fame as “the acknowledged father and pioneer of cable television in Canada.”
Function
This converter amplifier is used to convert low-band channels to high-band channels at cable distribution points.
Technical
The CDX-713 is reported to have been manufactured by Jerrold on request of Ed Jarmain, who needed it to expand the number of channels offered to his company’s subscribers. The CDX 713 converters with the LSA-795 trunk and allowed London Cable TV to expand to 12 Channels.
