Indigenous peoples around the world were active in plant breeding and seed trading long before European colonization. In North and South America, Indigenous farmers domesticated many plant species and traded seeds, the most famous perhaps being corn, squash, and beans. Seeds and plants also became trade items in a growing international business. Seed and plant sales were typically advertised through newspapers, but catalogues became the favoured mode of marketing in the nineteenth century for customers in Canada and across North America. Kenneth McDonald and Sons Limited was a Canadian business that was located in Ottawa and existed between 1876 and 1966. Founded by Kenneth McDonald, the company evolved into a seed and horticultural specialist, offering a wide range of plants and garden products available through retail outlets and seasonal mail-order catalogues. - Function
