DESIGNED, BUILT & USED IN CANADA WHEN NRC WAS WORLD LEADER IN PHOTOCHEMICAL STUDIES UNDERE.W.R. STEACIE'S LEADERSHIP. VERY FEW OF THESE DEVICES WERE MADE (APPROX. 3-4) & THIS MAY BE THE ONLY SURVIVING EXAMPLE. ACCORDING TO DONOR THE PUMP WORKED VERY QUICKLY & EFFICIENTLY (PER SFM)
Function
TO MIX GASES HOMOGENOUSLY WITHOUT CONTAMINATION. USED MAINLY AT LOW PRESSURES. GASES CAME INTO CONTACT WITH GLASS SURFACES - NO RISK OF CONTAMINATION FROM CONTACT WITH METAL OR GREASE.
Technical
IMPORTANT GAS MIXING INNOVATION USED IN CLASSIC PHOTO- CHEMISTRY EXPERIMENTS IN THE 1950s & 1960s AT NRC. TO FILL WITH GAS SMALL UPPERVALVES WERE LIFTED WITH MAGNETS. WHEN CONTROL UNIT IS SWITCHED ON, POWER ACTIVATES ELECTROMAGNETS WHICH EXERT AN OSCILLATING MAGNETIC FIELD ON SOFT IRONMAGNETS ENCLOSED IN GLASS PISTONS. IN OPERATION THE PISTONS MOVE UP & DOWN ROCKING ON SEE-SAW AT BOTTOM OF RECIPROCATOR, MIXING THE GAS IN THE TUBES EVENLY (SFM).
