Function: PRECISE MEASURES OF CAPACITY BASED ON PRIMARY LEAGAL STANDARDS. THEY WERE USED BY A COLONIAL PROVINCIAL GOVERNMENT AS LEGAL STANDARDS AGAINST WHICH COMMERCIAL & OTHER MEASURRES OF CAPACITY COULD BE MEASURED.
Technical: THE ENGLISH WINE GALLON WAS DEFINED IN THE ACT OF 1707 IN BRITAIN AS 231 CUBIC INCHES, WITH THE IMPERIAL GALLON DEFINED IN 1824 AS 277 CUBIC INCHES. [REF 2]
