Technical: Nicknamed the "Portapack", Sony's AV-300 was the most successful device of it's kind ever sold. Capable of recording 30 minutes of monochrome video and mono sound, with still frame capability, this recorder was used with a vidicon-based camera (please see 2002.0561]. When used with a camera, the internal battery lasted up to 45 minutes; playing into a standard TV using an internal RF converter, 60 minutes of playing time was possible. Using a special EIAJ cable and a receiver/monitor, the machine could also record off-air programs.

Silver metal plate fixed to inside of lid bears diagram & text "TAPE THREADING/ ATTENTION:/ PLEASE CONFIRM THE UNDER MENTIONED/ POSITION BEFORE THREADING THE TAPE/ FUNCTION SELECTION LEVER [right facing arrow symbol] STOP". "CAUTION/ Keep the tape path, and the other components contacting the/ tape clean. This includes the head drum, tape guides,/ rotary heads and auto/control head. If these items are/ dirty, picture quality may be severely degraded./ To clean the rotary heads, use a head cleaner saturated/ with cleaning fluid. Both are included in the accessory/ kit./ To clean the head drum, use a polishing cloth (supplied)/ or chamois saturated with cleaning fluid. Be sure to do/ this before and after operating the Videocorder in a/ corrosive atmosphere, near the seashore, or on a seagoing/ vessel" & diagram printed on decal, below.
