The sewing machine was purchased second-hand in Trois-Rivières, by the donor’s mother Cecile Dugré de Biens. Mrs. de Biens purchased the machine in the 1940s, definitely before 1950. She used it until 1980s. Mrs. De Biens passed away in 1989. She preferred to purchase a high quality sewing machine second-hand rather than spent less on a machine that was not as robust. Mrs. de Biens was from a relatively wealthy family; she was educated at the Ursulines convent in Trois-Rivières (founded in 1697). She learnt embroidery, lace-making, and was very skilled at sewing. Mrs. de Biens used the machine to make clothes for her 5 children and 11 grand-children. Cecile was the first person in Trois-Rivières to own and drive a car. The sewing machine was either sold or repaired at one point by Marcel Hamel (now Marcel Hamel et Fils, formally incorporated in 1969).
