Period
The hydrofoil ship was used circa 1968-1971.
Canada
The FHE 400 Hydrofoil vessel is the end result of a series of prototype hydrofoil vessels tested in Canada as part of a research program that culminated in its construction. This vessel can be considered as the marine equivalent of the Avro Arrow. The artist for this print, Robert W. Bradford, is undoubtedly one of Canada's foremost aviation artists. At the age of 18 he joined the Royal Canadian Air Force and became a pilot. After the second world war, Bradford worked at Avro Canada as a technical illustrator as of 1949. He was then hired as a project illustrator for De Havilland Aircraft in 1953. In the early 1960's, Ken Molson, Curator of the recently created National Aviation Museum, commissioned Bradford to do a series of paintings on some of the highlights of early Canadian aviation. This in turn led Mr. Molson to encourage the artist to leave de Havilland Aircraft of Canada and join N.A.M in 1966 as Assistant Curator. His works, dealing primarily with the history of flight in Canada, can be found in many important collections, such as those of the Canada Aviation Museum, Library and Archives Canada and Canada's Aviation Hall of Fame, amongst others. His work as an artist has been recognized internationally.
Function
To illustre and commemorate the R.C.N Prototype A.S.W Hydrofoil Ship.
Technical
The hydrofoil was designed to solve the problem faced by naval architects of increasing the speed of ships through rough waters. The hydrofoil concept allows the hull to be away from the water surface in order to maximize the speed potential. It was designed by the De Havilland Aircraft of Canada and completed in 1967. The ship arrived in Halifax, NS in 1968 for trials until 1971. The ship had a full load weight of 200 tons, a length of 151 feet, a hull beam of 21.5 feet and a foil span of 66 feet. The crew size was approximately 29 people.
