This geodimeter was acquired from a Canadian branch of the manufacturer known as AGAtronics. Surveying Canada’s extensive and rugged territory has demanded sophisticated science and played a crucial role in the assessment and exploitation of our natural resources. The donor and his family immigrated to Canada in 1952 and moved to British Columbia in 1964. He was commissioned a British Columbia Land Surveyor in 1969 and the artifact was used extensively by him in the province’s Cariboo area until 1978 when he acquired a newer model to replace it. Function

A storage case used to carry a geodimeter out into the field during land surveying. It also protected the artifact it housed during that subsequent transport. Technical

Model 6B likely came out around 1969 and was the first one with an orange finish rather than the earlier gray. This artifact represents a shift away from earlier instruments characterized by their mass and heft towards later ones that were so light they inspired the concept of the “total station”: a group of instruments mounted on a single tripod capable of making all of the usual surveying measurements. It was part of the first wave of lighter instruments using transistors. It also made use of of tungsten/mercury vapour lamps but they too would soon be superseded by the introduction of the laser, and then both microwave and infrared technology. Finish

A storage case with an orange synthetic body. The body has a metal handle on either side of its body as well as two others on its top that are made of the same material. A black synthetic sleeve covers every handle. All of the handles are held in place on the storage case with metal rivets. Four synthetic button feet are visible on the bottom of the storage case. A metal latch and leather clasp are visible on either side of the artifact. Both the latch and clasp are held to the case with rivets as well. Un étui qui a un corps orange fait en matériel synthétique. Il a une poignée en métal de chaque côté de son corps ainsi que deux autres sur sont dessus qui sont construits avec le même matériel. Une manche synthétique de couleur noire recouvre chacune des poignées et ils sont tous attachés à l'étui avec des rivets en métal. Un loquet en métal est visible de chaque côté de l'étui et ils sont fermés grâce à une sangle en cuir. Les deux sont attachés à l'étui de la même façon que les poignées.
