This artifact was acquired as part of CSTMC’s second annual group acquisition of new technologies. This acquisition focused on Toys, Play and Entertainment, and documents this aspect of Canadian popular culture in the second decade of the 21st century. Thomas the Tank Engine & Friends was originally broadcast in Canada on TVO. Children who visit the Canada Science and Technology Museum with their parents often relate the large locomotives in the Museum’s Locomotive Bay with characters from the Thomas the Tank Engine series. Through this series children are introduced to different types of locomotives, parts of the train, and railway responsibilities. - Function
-
Storage and playback medium for audio and video images, for home entertainment purposes. Disk contains feature film for playback on DVD player and television. This videodisk is intended for young audiences. - Technical
-
This item reflects a technology designed to entertain. Pre-recorded DVDs are produced on mass using a molding machine that physically stamps data onto the DVD. Discs like this one are known as a DVD-ROM because the data can only be read and not written or erased. Thomas the Tank Engine is a small fictional steam locomotive in The Railway Series books by the Reverend Wilbert Awdry and his son, Christopher. He is the titular character and became the most popular character in the series, and the accompanying television spin-off series, Thomas & Friends. The Greatest Stories is a two-disc US DVD set which was released in commemoration of the 65 anniversary of the Railway Series, featuring two first season episodes, two second season episodes, two third season episodes, one fourth season episode, one fifth season episode, one seventh season episode, four eighth season episodes, two ninth season episodes, two tenth season episodes, and three eleventh season episodes. - Area Notes
