This hand scale was used by the donor when he was inspector of dairy products for Agriculture Canada, in Toronto and Montréal, from around 1952 to 1955. Ag Canada inspectors all had this type of tool provided by their employer. They could weight the dairy products in commercial and retail shops and could determine if products were falsified. He studied at Kemptville College in Dairy in 1944. After his inspecting work, the donor worked in the dairy research field most of his life at Agriculture Canada, working with Dr. Doug Emmons first at the Dairy Technology Group, then at the Dairy Technology Research Institute followed by the Food Research Institute and Food Research Center. He co-authored with Dr. Emmons several research articles during his career. This company had a diverse production from postal proof date hammer, to medals, end books, church brass work, dairy tokens, etc. The Pritchard-Andrews Company was founded in 1895 and ceased operations in 1997. Technical

Steelyard type of scale date back to about 500 B.C. and continued to be used well into the 20th century. It was cheap, compact and accurate enough for mainly mercantile use. These types of balances use a lever, a sliding counterweight, and a hook or pan for holding the load.
