In an email from Jan Davies, the donor notes: I used both items in the Department of Anesthesia at the Foothills Medical Centre. I used the precordial stethoscope possibly as early as 1983. The ear pieces were provided by the (sole) company that sold the anesthetic agents. They set up a booth at the Annual Meeting of the (then) Canadian Anaesthetists' Society and offered free ear molds. I recall the process as being slightly unpleasant! However, the ear-piece with its attachment was very useful. Last night I was thinking about this device and recalling that I actually used it more with an esophageal stethoscope. There were two reasons for this. First, the esophageal attachment gave much better fidelity of sound. Second, the connection to the ear-piece was closer to where I stood at the head of the patient and so I was more able to move about a bit. In practice, I don't think I remained 'plugged in' during the entire duration of the anesthetic and operation, except when I was anesthetising infants and children. (I did work for a short while at the Alberta Children's Hospital and also provided anesthetic care to infants from the Intensive Care Nursery at the Foothills Medical Centre.) Premièrement, le stéthoscope œsophagien offrait une bien meilleure fidélité du son. Deuxièmement, la connexion à l'écouteur était plus proche de l'endroit où je me tenais à la tête du patient, ce qui me permettait de bouger un peu. En pratique, je ne pense pas être resté "branché" pendant toute la durée de l'anesthésie et de l'opération, sauf lorsque j'anesthésiais des nourrissons et des enfants. (J'ai travaillé pendant une courte période à l'hôpital pour enfants de l'Alberta et j'ai également prodigué des soins anesthésiques à des nourrissons de la nurserie de soins intensifs du centre médical de Foothills).

Technical

This is typical of the head of a stethoscope that would be plugged into the end of the tubing and then taped to the front of a patient’s chest to use the device as a precordial, and not esophageal, stethoscope. Medical professionals often find that the stethoscope’s generic ear tips are uncomfortable or do not fit their ears properly. This ear piece was taken from a mold of the Dr.’s ear and, in this way, was custom made. The mold fits overtop of the generic ear tip of the stethoscope providing a proper fit and better comfort. Il s'agit typiquement de la tête d'un stéthoscope que l'on branche à l'extrémité du tube et que l'on colle ensuite à l'avant de la poitrine du patient pour utiliser l'appareil comme stéthoscope précordial, et non œsophagien. Les professionnels de la santé trouvent souvent que les embouts génériques du stéthoscope sont inconfortables ou ne s'adaptent pas correctement à leurs oreilles. Cet embout a été réalisé à partir d'un moule de l'oreille du médecin et a donc été fabriqué sur mesure. Le moule s'adapte à l'embout générique du stéthoscope, ce qui lui confère une bonne tenue et un meilleur confort.
