Used at the Foothills Medical Centre in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Utilisé au centre médical Foothills à Calgary, Alberta, Canada.
Function
Used to perform tracheal intubation during general anaesthesia or cardiopulmonary resuscitation or for surgical procedures on the larynx or other parts of the upper tracheobronchial tree. The laryngoscope blade allows for the tongue to be displaced and for better placement of an endotracheal tube.
Technical
One of the difficulties in providing anesthetic care to pregnant and/or obese women comes when performing tracheal intubation. The introduction into the mouth and pharynx of a regular laryngoscope is often impeded by the patient's breasts. It was Dr Sanjay Datta in Boston who determined that using a short-handled laryngoscopes would be helpful. Dr Datta completed his anesthetic training in the UK and then spent a year as a research fellow in regional and obstetric anesthesia in the Department of Anesthesia at McGill, before moving to Boston. There he saw differences in both the patients and anesthetic practices, in comparison to Montreal and Manchester.
