Originally acquired by donor as a gift for his tenth birthday (May, 1955, Halifax). Was purchased by parents to replace his existing radio, nightlight, and bedroom clock with an all-in-one machine. Radio was purchased at a local radio shop, the first year of the model’s manufacture (1955). Donor remembers being thrilled by the gift, and slept with the nightlight on for many years. Radio was used to listen to hockey, music, and talk radio from 1955 through the 1980s. Was retired, in part, because his wife expressed concern with long-term exposure to green nightlight (bulb had never been changed, which raised questions about what kind of light was being emitted). Before being retired, the radio had been left tuned to CBC for several years. Donor believes being left on one station for so long led to a malfunction in the tuning mechanism, which no longer works.
Function
Receives AM standard broadcast signals and serves as a timepiece and nightlight. According to manufacturer, could also be used to switch on lamps, start coffee, and turn on television (see supp. info).
Technical
A representative example of technological convergence in mid-century consumer radio technology. Additional note: radio uses “Panelescent Light,” which donor suggests may have been borrowed from an earlier 1950s line of Sylvania television sets equipped with “HaloLight.” This is because HaloLight, which framed the television screen and was meant to make viewing easier on the eyes, emitted a similar green glow. Compelling connection; more research required.
