The “neckset” was positioned as a new technology between acting as a speakerphone and a traditional headset. The SoundBeam was developed as far as a pre-production model used in market testing. A thousand of the devices were made and tested in offices across Canada. Despite being pitched to the leadership at Bell Northern and Northern Telecom and undergoing a cost breakdown analysis, the “necktie” never moved beyond the concept stage in 1983. The rise of cell phones and the invention of Bluetooth became adopted by the workforce and quickly sent technology such as the SoundBeam all but obsolete. Function

A wearable, hands free, speaker and microphone unit used with a telephone. This particular unit was used in the pre-production product trails to test how the market might use the product. Cette unité en particulier étais utilisé en pré production pour tester le marché et accumuler des renseignements sur leur nouveau produit.

Technical

The “hands free neckset”, which became the SoundBeam, was first proposed by Bell Northern Research industrial designer Jim Bee in 1983. The SoundBeam was developed create an area of sound around the wearer which was not interfered with from people outside the telephone conversation. Noises directly in front of or behind the shoulder set wearer are in a null space for the microphone meaning that their interference is reduced to almost zero. People to the sides of the wearer also see a significant noise reduction of up to 18 dbs. Le casque sans fil est éventuellement devenu le SoundBeam et a été propose par Bell Northern Research et leur concepteur Jim Bee en 1983. Le SoundBeam a été développé pour créer un environnement de son autour du porteur qui n'était pas dérangé par des bruits en dehors d'une conversation téléphonique. Les bruits directement en avant ou en arrière du porteur sont des espaces vide et l'interférence est réduite à quasiment zéro. The artifact is made of a bronze synthetic material and has a curved "U" shape. It shows a circular speaker at the bottom of its proper right side with a green button as well as two additional speakers (one directly above the first one and one on its proper left end) L'objet est construit avec un matériel synthétique de couleur bronze et est courbée en forme de la lettre ‘'U''. L'objet a haut-parleur sur le bon côté droit avec un bouton vert ainsi que deux autres hauts-parleurs (un directement au-dessus du premier mentionner et un autre au bout du bon coter gauche)
