This artifact was part of the firefighting equipment of the National Museum of Science and Technology. The museum had 4 or 5 fire extinguishers of the same manufacturer and type. The company that manufactured the extinguisher was renamed several times over the span of its life, including General Manufacturing Co. in 1905. The company would change its name another four times before it was eventually auctioned off in 2001.
Function
Used to control or extinguish small fires. Utiliser pour contrôler ou éteindre des feux.
Technical
The first fire extinguisher was created in 1818 by George William Manby of Britain and contained Potassium Carbonate. The wheeled version of fire extinguishers has been used in Canada since the end of the 19th Century. Two principal types of extinguishers existed at that time: Stored pressure and cartridge-operated extinguishers. Today, the CO2 extinguisher, foam, water and chemical powder extinguishers are favored because other previously used substances were deemed harmful to both the user and the environment. This extinguisher is made up of two cylinders. The smaller cylinder contains pressurized nitrogen and the larger one es a reservoir that contains a powdered chemical called monoammonium phosphate ((NH4) H2PO4). When in operation, this extinguisher blankets the fire and acts as a suppressant that can be used for fire types A, B, C. Le premier extincteur moderne a été inventé par George William Manby, un britannique, en 1818.
