This telephone was produced by Canadian telecommunications giant Northern Telecom and developed by Bell Northern Research (BNR). Meridian was a line of Northern Telecom digital office products launched in February 1985. The M3000 was designed to work with Northern Telecom’s Meridian SL-1 Integrated Services Network, which could integrate communication services (including voice, text, and email messages) and connectivity between computing environments for 30 to 5000 subscriber lines. BNR scientists turned to touchscreen technology to ensure the M3000 could effectively help its users understand and operate the features available in modern communication systems.
Function
This artifact was plugged to the M3000 telephone in order to supply power so it could perform its functions in an office environment.
Technical
Introduced in 1985, the M3000 used technology long before it became commonplace. This may be the first example of touchscreen technology in a production telephone. The telephone includes many features that later became customary on smartphones. The M3000 touchscreen uses two pressure-sensitive membranes placed over a liquid crystal display LCD. Each membrane contains transparent metallic strips. When users touch the screen, the metal strips come in contract with each other, generating messages that are sent to the touch panel processor. To minimize costs, BNR scientists designed the display layout with graphics in the dynamic central portion, complemented by discrete icons with “fixed” buttons down the sides Introduit en 1985 le M3000 utilisait une technologie bien avancer pour son temps.
