The Inspire 1 Pro was the first drone at CTV Edmonton to be used live on air in 2016 as an upgrade to the Phantom 2. It captured a live weather shot over the west end of Edmonton. Cam (the drone’s operator) believes this footage is also one of the first live drone shots ever used in Canada, and possibly North America. The success of CTV Edmonton in using this footage would eventually culminate in the purchase of a fleet of drones (starting in 2019 with the Mavic 2 Pro) and the training of two additional drone pilots between 2019 and 2022 to bring their total to three licensed drone pilots for the news station. Function

The controller used to operate the Zenmuse X5 camera equipped to the Inspire 1 Pro drone used by CTV Edmonton. This remote could move the camera left and right as well as zoom in or out. It functions by emitting a radio signal from the remote with the help of a radio transmitter inside the controller. The camera has a receiver that interprets the radio signal and the controller can thereby tell the camera what its supposed to do as it sits on a gimbal. Technical

The Inspire 1 Pro came equipped with its own high-quality camera (previous models, like the Phantom 2, required the purchase of a GoPro). The Inspire 1 Pro camera captured stabilized 4K video and also permitted the use of exchangeable lenses. It also had the option of an additional hand controller, which meant that two camera operators could control the drone at once: a “pilot” controlling flight and a “camera operator” controlling video. This made the use of other features, like zoom, much easier to effectively control. The Inspire 1 Pro had more stable video connection with the ground hand controller, as well as permitted use of the drone over further distances. Most significantly, it could accommodate live video transmission. This made it an ideal candidate for news broadcasting and an obvious upgrade from the Phantom 2. Finish

A silver synthetic controller with two white synthetic antennas on its back. A grey metal mounting bracket with a grey synthetic USB cable is attached to its front in between two metal joysticks. Two silver synthetic buttons sit below the joysticks along with a white sticker with black writing. One metal silver switch is on the proper left back side of the remote control along with a scrolling wheel and a red recording button. Another scrolling wheel along with two other buttons are visible on the opposite back side. Under the controller is a metal foot stand that lifts the back end of the controller off the ground. A manufacturing label is also written in silver writing below the remote control along with a sticker with black lettering and two additional buttons. Une étiquette du fabricateur est visible en lettrage argent sous l'objet. Un autocollant blanc avec un lettrage noir est aussi présent avec deux boutons additionnels.
