This geodimeter was acquired from a Canadian branch of the manufacturer known as AGAtronics. Surveying Canada’s extensive and rugged territory has demanded sophisticated science and played a crucial role in the assessment and exploitation of our natural resources. The donor and his family immigrated to Canada in 1952 and moved to British Columbia in 1964. He was commissioned a British Columbia Land Surveyor in 1969 and the artifact was used extensively by him in the province’s Cariboo area until 1978 when he acquired a newer model to replace it. Function

A cable used to supply power to a geodimeter so it could perform its measurements during land surveying expeditions. Un câble utilise pour alimenter un géodimètre pour qu'il puisse mesurer pendant des expéditions d'arpentage.

Technical

Model 6B likely came out around 1969 and was the first one with an orange finish rather than the earlier gray. This artifact represents a shift away from earlier instruments characterized by their mass and heft towards later ones that were so light they inspired the concept of the “total station”: a group of instruments mounted on a single tripod capable of making all of the usual surveying measurements. It was part of the first wave of lighter instruments using transistors. It also made use of of tungsten/mercury vapour lamps but they too would soon be superseded by the introduction of the laser, and then both microwave and infrared technology. Finish

A black cable made of synthetic material. One end of the cable forks into two separate cables that have metal plugs on their ends. One of those cables has a black synthetic handle while the other has a red synthetic handle. The other end of the cable has a large silver coloured metal adapter piece. The adapter has a head that is detachable when you unscrew it. The head dangles from the adapter piece with the help of a silver metal chain. Engraved markings are nn both the head and the handle of the adapter piece. Inside the head of the adapter piece are six plug holes that have a gold coloured metal inside them. The face of the holes has a salmon coloured metal. Un câble noir fait avec du matériel synthétique. Un bout du câble sépare en deux câbles qui ont des fiches en métal. Une fiche a une manche synthétique de couleur rouge et l'autre de couleur noire. L'autre bout du câble a un morceau adaptateur en métal de couleur argent. L'adaptateur a une tête détachable qui est tenu au corps du câble avec une chaine en métal. Des marques sont gravées sur la tête et la manche du morceau adaptateur. À l'intérieur de la tête de l'adaptateur il y a six trous pour des fiches qui sont de couleur or. La face des trous sont faits avec un métal de couleur saumon.
