Canada: Donated by the Guelph Civic Museum.
Function: Steam engine which allowed steam at atmospheric pressure to fill up the space underneath a piston in a cylinder while it is lifted by a counterweight beam. Steam had to be admitted to and exhausted from the cylinder at the right time so that the piston could be moved back and forth.
Technical: Steam engines were widely used before the advent of electricity. This particular engine was a model, and was possibly meant to be used as a demonstration of the mechanics of a steam engine for students.
