Used at Foothills Medical Centre in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Utilisé au Foothills Medical Centre à Calgary, Alberta, Canada.
Function
Used to monitor and display cardiac pulse rate in beats per minute.
Technical
This is one of the earliest types cardiac monitors. It was brought to the Foothills Hospital in 1967 by a British-trained anaesthetist, Dr. Hugh Howell-Jones, who had worked at the National Hospital, Queen Square, London, where he had been a consultant anaesthetist. He may have used this machine for private cases. Dr. Maltby said that he "never saw it in use after I joined the department in 1970, even though we had only three ECG machines for nine ORs". And when the donor started her training in Halifax at what was then called the Victoria General Hospital (now the QE II), the hospital had only 3 ECG machines about the same number of ORs. Dr. Davies recalled that, “the cardiac room and the neurosurgery room always had one and then the rest of us argued about whose patient was sicker than the others', so as to have 'dibs' on the monitor.” Interestingly, there are 6 cardiac leads on this machine, which would have allowed the anesthesiologist to get a complete ECG tracing. Most monitors like this in the 1970s-1980s had only three leads (or wires), so the view of the heart was less complete.
