Frank Bradley was one of the thousands of young Canadians who died while serving his country during the Second World War. To quote his son, Barry Bradley, “He enlisted at Saskatoon in September 1940 and was posted to various training centers in Canada. In August 1943 he shipped out to England and in January 1944 was posted to 518 sqd which was based at Tiree Scotland. This was a meteorological squadron. On August 16, 1944 the Halifax bomber that my father was in collided with another Halifax over the base. There were no survivors. ” Mr. Bradley served with No 518 Squadron, Royal Air force, a meteorological unit that performed regular (daily?) flights into the North Atlantic to collect weather date. Mind you, its crews also kept a look out for German submarines, in order to alert anti-submarine ships or aircraft in the vicinity. At the time of the disaster, No 518 Squadron was stationed on the isle of Tiree, in the Hebrides archipelago, off the west coast of Scotland. Pilot Officer Bradley was a wireless operator air gunner (WAG). Barry also added: "(Mr. Bradley) kept a scrap book prior to going overseas. It contains newspaper clippings and pages of some aircraft identification publications. There are also some colour pages of clipping that are probably from a magazine.”
Function
To collect and preserve newspaper clippings of interest to the collector.
Technical
The scrapbook itself has little technical significance, but reflects the importance in collecting and preserving newspaper clippings. In this case, the importance is accentuated in the fact that a Second World War soldier collected these clippings.
