Newbridge Networks was an Ottawa-based Canadian company founded by Sir Terry Matthews in 1986 after leaving Mitel, a company he had co-founded with Michael Cowpland. Newbridge focused on the design and manufacturing of data and voice networking ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode) products and routers used in large corporate and public networks as well as low-capacity feeder devices for linking smaller and remote offices. They shipped their first flagship product, the 3600 Mainstreet bandwidth manager the same year. This 3600 MainStreet was used in Newbridge labs since it was built. Newbridge was purchased by Alcatel in February 2000.
Function
A data transmission component of a computer network, the 3600 MainStreet was designed to unify telecommunication and computer networks. This switching device allows network expansion for a full range of user traffic such as the carriage of voice (compression), video, facsimile, data, frame relay switching cards, E1 and T1 interfaces.
Technical
A flexible and upgradable network hub used in private and public networks, the 3600 MainStreet is a network hub which uses the Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) core protocol. It bridges user traffic in the carriage of voice, video, data, E1 and T1 interfaces, and frame relay, and networking technology originally designed for Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) infrastructure in digital telecommunications but used today in other network interfaces. Allowing 30,000 frames/sec of throughput, the 3600 can be upgraded to 36120 MainStreet by adding a fastbus interface module and packet transfer engine (PTE) capable of boosting throughput to 100,000 frames/sec.
