This fabric tester was donated to the collection by an aircraft mechanic who worked for Spartan Air Services from 1952 to 1983. The donor routinely used this fabric tester in his work at Spartan and mentioned that this particular tool was frequently borrowed by mechanics at the nearby flying club to test the fabric on the club’s aircraft. Cet outil de vérification de tissu est parvenu à la collection grâce à un mécanicien d'avion qui travaillait pour les Services de transport Aérien Spartan (Spartan Air Services) entre 1952 et 1983 respectivement. Le donateur utilisait fréquemment cet outil à son travail et il a mentionné que les mécaniciens du club de vol l'empruntaient aussi pour vérifier le tissu sur l'aéronef qui appartenait au club.

Function

This case was used to house a Seyboth Fabric Tester. It protected the tester during transportation as well as during storage. L'étui était utilisé pour protéger un appareil de vérification de tissus Seyboth pendant son transport. L'étui était aussi utilisé pour le rangement de l'artefact.

Technical

The Seyboth Fabric Tester provided a quick and accurate evaluation of the strength and integrity of fabric covered surfaces on an aircraft, with minimum damage to the testing surfaces. It was also designed to be operated by anyone, not just trained personnel, and to be portable and inexpensive. There are six colour bands in the scale on the tool’s handle. They are used to indicate the strength of the fabric after the plunger has been pressed into it. Red and orange bands mean that the fabric is too weak and is not airworthy. A yellow band means the fabric is acceptable but only for intermediate grade fabric. Three green bands, first, second and third, indicate that fabric strength is satisfactory, very good, and excellent, respectively. L'échelle est utilisée pour déterminer la force nécessaire pour que l'épaule d'un piston plongeur à bout pointu transperce un tissu. Une bande jaune indique que le tissu est acceptable, mais seulement pour des tissus à catégorie intermédiaire. Trois bandes vertes, premier, deuxième et troisième indiquent que la force du tissu est satisfaisant, très bon et excellent respectivement.

Finish

A brown wood box that is rectangular in shape. It has a hinged lid that is fastened with six metal screws. Both the hinges and the screws are possibly made of brass. A metal manufacturing plate is painted black and held to the face of the case with four metal rivets. The manufacturing plate has white lettering on it that gives directions on how to operate the fabric tester inside of the case. The top of the case has a metal latch that could possibly be made of the same material as the hinges and the screws. The latch is held to the top of the box with a metal screw and also hooks onto a screw to close the lid of the case. A cylindrical hole is visible inside both the lid and the case in order to accommodate the fabric tester. Un étui qui fait en bois de couleur brune qui est en forme rectangulaire. Il a un couvercle tenu en place avec une charnière et six vis. La charnière et les vis sont possiblement faits en laiton. Une plaque du manufacturier en métal est peinturé noir et il est attaché à la face de l'étui avec quatre rivets. La plaque a du lettrage blanc pour des directives pour l'opération de l'appareil de vérification des tissus à l'intérieur de l'étui. Le dessus de l'étui a un crochet ou un loquet en métal qui pourrait possiblement être fait avec le même matériel que la charnière et les vis. Le loquet est tenu en place avec une vis et peut s'accrocher à une autre vis pour fermer le couvercle. Un trou cylindrique est visible à l'intérieur de l'étui et son couvercle pour accommoder l'appareil de vérification de tissus.
