This fibre optic amplifier was developed by Nortel Networks (formerly Northern Telecom) in Ottawa, Ontario. Nortel Networks was one of the most important manufacturers of telecommunications equipment in the world during the 1990s and early 2000s. L’amplificateur à câble à fibre optique était conçu par Nortel Networks (Précédemment Northern Telecom) en Ontario dans la ville d’Ottawa. Function
This artifact functions by amplifying or boosting an optical signal through a fibre optic cable network. Cet artefact amplifie ou augmente les signaux optiques avec un réseau à câble à fibres optiques.
Technical
This amplifier permits fibre optic signals to be transmitted across greater distances. The farther that a light beam travels through an optical fibre, the weaker it becomes. This optical amplifier contains lasers and specially treated fibres that boost the light beam (i.e. signal) without first having to convert it to electricity. Cet amplificateur permet à un signal optique d'être transmit sous des distances plus élevées. La distance traversée dans une fibre optique par un faisceau lumineux lui rend plus faible. A green coloured metal circuit board is contained in a silver metal rectangle known as a passive components tray. The circuit board has blue, pink, orange and white synthetic fibre optic cables running across it. It also has other various metal components such as isolators, power taps, and WDM combiners and separators. The artifact has three synthetic cablers reaching out of the top of its body that each has a blue and white synthetic adapter plug.
