This type of rule was used by government employees from the hog grading dept. of Agriculture Canada to provide grading to the hog industry. [Identical/similar rules are believed to have been used by Provincial governments, too.) (ref. 2)

Fonction

Used to categorize sows, and measure backfat on market hogs.

Technique

One side of the rule was used to categorize sows: this example defines 6 categories (earlier ones had 4 categories only). The other side was used to measure backfat on market hogs, and is graduated in mm. The backfat measurement would be combined with the carcass weight to calculate a given index. Hog grading was performed (and still is in 2005) for settlement purposes only. In 1993 electronic grading was introduced and ruler grading was gradually phased out. In 1996 the grading program was handed over to the private sector. (ref. 2)
