Period
This artifact was used between 1960-1980 in Vancouver at UBC.
Canada
The memory drum has a history going back to 1887 and the earliest psychological laboratories in North America and Europe. In Canada after World War II, memory drums became part of the emerging field of cognitive psychology. This memory drum was used by at UBC Psychology Department by Prof. Douglas Kenny, who's research and teaching centered on the areas of personality and learning, developmental psychology and patterns of child development. Prof. Kenny was chair of the psychology department from 1965 to 1970. He was also president of UBC from 1975 to 1983.
Function
This artifact functions by presenting various stimulus materials such as words to memorize through an illuminated slit screen.
Technical
The specific line or word is illuminated by a mercury-vapor tube. The precision of this light exposure (on and off) prevents time-lag, which is essential for memory studies. This memory drum has variable exposure times adjusted by the dials on the back. Wichita Apparatus Supply, Inc. also made a precision chronoscope for visual studies.
