This artifact was used both by the donor, and the donor's father as a display piece in their home between the 1960's and 2015.

The donor’s father was a dairy scientist with the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food for some 41 years. He collected old items related to dairying, and these items ended up with the donor upon his passing. He would go antique shopping in the Gananoque region of Ontario as well as trade some of his old clothing items. His exchanges were quite often for antique bottles found across the northern part of Leeds County. The donor further bolstered the collection with antiques from the eastern Townships in his quest to recreate a general store set in the 1890s in his basement in the Glebe neighborhood of Ottawa. This type of grater was created by three inventers from the United States who worked alongside another Canadian inventor from Vancouver. The artifact was bought in Perth, Ontario by the couple who donated it. Le père du donateur était un scientifique des produits laitiers qui travaillait pour le ministère de l'Agriculture et de l'Alimentation de l'Ontario pour plus de 41 ans. Il a collectionné des artefacts qui correspondaient à son métier. Son fils a contribué à la collection en magasinant pour des antiques dans la région de Gananoque en Ontario. Il a aussi augmenté la collection en échangeant ces vêtements usagés contre des bouteilles antiques retrouvé au travers Leeds Compté. Le but de ces acquisitions était pour créer un magasin général situé dans les années 1890-s dans son sous-sol à Ottawa. Dernièrement le donateur a aussi amélioré la collection avec des objets qu'il a achetés qui appartenaient de la région des Cantons de L'Est. Ce type de râpe conçue par trois des inventeurs anglais résidents aux États-Unis et un Canadien de Vancouver. Elle a été achetée par le couple Irvine à Perth, Ontario.

Used to grate food to a variety of sizes during the process of food preparation. Utilisé pour râper des aliments avec des finesses variées pour la cuisson.

Technical

A grater that was originally part of a set of three cheese graters that fit one inside the other. These graters were designed with different apertures in order to accommodate varying sized of whatever item being grated. They also came with a pinhole at the top of them to facilitate easy storage by hanging them all together. Une râpe qui lorsque vendue à l'origine, faisait partie d'un ensemble de trois râpes qui s'imbriquaient l'une dans l'autre et qui râpaient à différents degrés de finesse. Les râpes venaient avec un trou pour les suspendre.

Finish

A cheese grater made of silver coloured metal that is magnetic and rectangular in shape. The metal is embossed with the name of the manufacturer. Both the top and bottom of the metal are curled. A small pinhole is also visible at the top of the grater. Une râpe de fromage fait avec un métal de couleur argent qui est magnétique et qui est aussi fait en forme rectangulaire. Le métal est embossé avec le nom du manufacturier. Le dessus et le bas de la râpe est courbée. Un petit trou est visible sur le haut de la râpe.
