This artifact represents the development of one of Canada’s earliest commercial cable television systems because of Edwin R. Jarmain. In 1952, he successfully established an experimental cable operation in London, Ontario. He increased reliable access to over-the-air television by erecting a large rhombic antenna, and then transmitting—via cable. The rhombic antenna could pull down a stronger signal and provide a much more reliable television service. By 1974, service had expanded to 100,000 homes in Ontario, prompting Jarmain and his sons to go public as Canadian Cablesystems Inc. The company was bought out by Rogers Communications in 1979. In 2011, Jarmain was inducted into Canada's Telecommunications Hall of Fame as “the acknowledged father and pioneer of cable television in Canada.”
Function
This artifact is used to amplify a television signal along a main cable distribution line. It does this by accepting a signal through an input and then outputs the same signal at a higher amplitude in order to adjust for a loss of amplitude as the signal passes along a distribution line.
Technical
Used “push-pull circuitry” to boost a signal in a cable line so that it could be received further along a distribution chain. It is probably the first time a push-pull circuitry was used in CATV amplifiers. This model also reportedly lead to the development of a CDX-713 converter amplifier which allowed the company to increase the number of channels offered from 5 to 12.

Finish
A sliver coloured square metal object with a black synthetic cable coming out its proper right front corner as well as a metal power switch. Twelve metal cylinders sit on top of the artifact along with a black synthetic dial knob and a manufacturer's plate. A glass screen shields a metal reading arm with a scale behind it. A transformer also sits on the top of the artifact.
