This fibre optic amplifier was developed by Nortel Networks (formerly Northern Telecom) in Ottawa, Ontario. Nortel Networks was one of the most important manufacturers of telecommunications equipment in the world during the 1990s and early 2000s. L’amplificateur à câble à fibre optique était conçu par Nortel Networks (Précédemment Northern Telecom) en Ontario dans la ville d’Ottawa. Function
This artifact converts a beam of light, transmitted through a fibre optic cable, back into an electric signal that can be “read” by an electronic communications device. Technical
This device contains a semiconductor light sensor, or photodetector, that converts light back into an electric signal. This reverses the process that occurred in the laser (present at the start of the fibre optic transmission chain) and makes the signal compatible with an electronic communications device. Ce dispositif contient un capteur de luminosité semi-conductrice, ou un photodétecteur qui transforme la luminosité pour le retourner à un signal électrique. An artifact that has a blue and white synthetic cable terminal that is attached to a white synthetic cable. The cable is attached to a gold coloured metal box. Inside this housing box is a series of metal objects: a pre-amplifier, capacitors, resistors and possibly a detector. The top of the housing is sealed with a glass pane. Two sides of the housing have three metal bars that extend horizontally on either side that are gold in colour. A white sticker on the front of the receiver has black lettering on it. Cet artefact a un connecteur de câble qui est fait avec un matériel synthétique de couleur bleue et blanche. Le connecteur est attaché à un câble synthétique blanc. Le câble est attaché à un boîtier de couleur or qui est fait en métal. À l'intérieur du boîtier il y a une série d'objets fait en métal : un pré amplificateur, des condensateurs, des batteries de résistances et possiblement un détecteur. Le dessus du boîtier est fermé avec une fenêtre en verre. Deux côtés du boîtier ont trois tiges en métal de couleur or chaque qui sortent horizontalement. Un autocollant de couleur blanche a un lettrage noir dessus. L'autocollant est situé sur le devant du boîtier en métal.
