Canada
The T. Eaton Company was founded by Timothy Eaton in 1869. Retailing in Canada changed dramatically because of Eaton, in part because of the company’s revolutionary and vigorous advertising. This object represents one method the company used to strengthen its sales. A T. Eaton store in Toronto included a school offering cooking instruction. These lessons familiarized women with unknown Eaton’s products, probably from both the kitchen appliance section and the grocery department, and made already familiar products more desirable. The recipe books and baking powder were given away as part of these lessons and provide an idea of food and recipes that were available at the time.
